As medical workers tended to 57 people injured in a Russian aerial bomb attack on a Kharkiv city hospital, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made an impassioned plea for international help, linking his country’s suffering directly to the need for a new peace initiative modeled on the recent Gaza deal.
The human cost of the war was at the forefront of Zelensky’s latest address. He described the horrific scene in Kharkiv and detailed other attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure across the Sumy and Kirovohrad regions. This, he stated, is the daily reality of Russia’s “aerial terror.”
Against this brutal backdrop, Zelensky offered a surprising glimmer of hope, drawn from the Middle East. He has seized on President Donald Trump’s “success” in brokering the Gaza peace plan, presenting it as a viable path out of the violence. “If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well,” he argued.
Zelensky is pushing this message through all available diplomatic channels. He personally congratulated President Trump by phone and has been coordinating strategy with European leaders, including Finland’s President Alex Stubb, to build momentum for a new round of peace talks.
His appeal is twofold: a call for diplomatic intervention led by the US, and a desperate request for the tools of survival. Zelensky was specific in his need for “Patriot, NASAMS, SAMP/T, and other vital systems,” framing them as essential for protecting innocent lives and creating the “peace through strength” required to end the war.
