Zelensky Says US Offers Historic Miami Meeting to Fast-Track June Peace Deal

Date:

The United States has proposed an unprecedented peace summit in Miami next week and established a June deadline for ending the Russia-Ukraine war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced. This development marks a notable escalation in American mediation efforts.
In remarks to reporters publicized early Saturday, Zelensky revealed that Washington’s invitation for Ukrainian and Russian negotiating teams to meet on American soil represents a first in the conflict’s history. “The United States has proposed for the first time that the two negotiating teams — Ukraine and Russia — meet in the United States, probably in Miami, in a week’s time,” Zelensky stated, adding that US officials want to resolve everything by June.
The Miami talks would build on two previous rounds of US-facilitated negotiations held in Abu Dhabi beginning in January. While those sessions achieved a humanitarian breakthrough through a major prisoner exchange, they failed to bridge the gap on territorial issues at the heart of the conflict. Russia currently occupies about one-fifth of Ukraine and is insisting on both recognition of these occupied areas and additional territorial gains in the Donetsk region.
Ukraine has firmly and repeatedly refused to accept any territorial concessions, maintaining that doing so would violate sovereignty and establish a dangerous precedent. Moscow has stated that its territorial demands are essential to any agreement and has threatened military escalation if negotiations do not deliver satisfactory territorial outcomes. This deadlock over territory represents the most significant barrier to achieving peace.
As peace efforts continue, so does the fighting. Zelensky reported on Saturday that Russia had launched strikes against infrastructure critical to Ukraine’s nuclear power plant operations the previous night. The attacks forced several nuclear reactor units to reduce their output, with one unit shutting down automatically. Zelensky described the strikes as unprecedented terrorism and demanded that Russia demonstrate genuine commitment to negotiations by ceasing attacks on essential civilian infrastructure.
