Péter Szijjártó, the former Hungarian Foreign Minister, has made a significant career shift by resigning from his parliamentary role to join Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD in a senior capacity. He announced his decision through a social media statement, expressing that he had accepted “a highly prestigious offer” from BYD, a leading global company in the electric vehicle market. Szijjártó’s new role will involve overseeing external relations and spearheading the development of new business areas for the company.
BYD, recognized as the largest producer of new-energy vehicles globally, is enhancing its footprint in Hungary with the establishment of a significant manufacturing facility in Szeged. This development is among Hungary’s most substantial economic investments, a venture that Szijjártó supported during his tenure in government. The company has made remarkable strides in the electric vehicle industry, having sold over 4.5 million vehicles worldwide and surpassing several major competitors in recent years.
Discussions had taken place among Fidesz party leaders, including Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, regarding Szijjártó’s impending departure. In light of this development, the executive committee of the party is anticipated to deliberate on adjustments within their parliamentary group in the near future.
Szijjártó’s transition to a corporate role at BYD underscores the strengthening economic relationships between Hungary and China, particularly within the automotive and electric vehicle sectors. This move not only highlights the evolving landscape of international business alliances but also reflects the increasing influence and integration of Chinese companies in the European market.
