Greek Economy Poised to Outpace Eurozone Growth Amid Challenges Through 2028

Date:

Greece’s economy is projected to outpace the eurozone’s average growth rate through 2028, despite challenges such as rising inflation and high energy prices, according to the Bank of Greece. Economic forecasts predict that Greece’s gross domestic product (GDP) will increase by 2% in 2026, 1.9% in 2027, and return to 2% in 2028, indicating a more robust growth outlook compared to the broader eurozone.

In the second quarter of 2026, Greece experienced a year-on-year economic expansion of 1.9%, surpassing the eurozone’s growth of 1.2%. This growth has been primarily driven by household consumption, investment, and exports. During this period, private consumption saw a 1.7% rise, investment increased by 6.1%, and exports of goods and services grew by 2.2% compared to the same period in the previous year.

Despite the positive growth indicators, the increase in imports outpaced that of exports, which limited the overall contribution of international trade to Greece’s economic growth. To maintain and enhance economic momentum, strengthening domestic production and expanding export capacity remain key priorities for the country.

However, rising inflation, particularly in energy and services, poses a threat to household purchasing power and could potentially impact the economic outlook in the coming years. The Bank of Greece continues to monitor these developments closely, as they could influence the country’s economic trajectory.
