In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed key agreements in Washington on Thursday, focusing on energy collaboration and law enforcement. This meeting, which had been delayed due to a scheduling clash with U.S. President Trump’s campaign commitments, highlighted both countries’ commitment to regional energy security and shared intelligence practices.
The agreements form part of a broader initiative under the U.S.-backed Trump Peace Pipelines Framework, aiming to enhance regional natural gas and oil infrastructure. This initiative is particularly focused on expanding American liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports and developing energy infrastructure throughout Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the Western Balkans. These efforts represent continuity in Hungary’s energy policy, tracing back to agreements made during former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s administration, including a civilian nuclear cooperation agreement signed in February 2026.
Discussions during the meeting also explored potential American oil purchases, extending the operational life of Hungary’s Paks I nuclear power plant, and investment in small modular reactors. Hungary’s current TISZA government has maintained aspects of these nuclear cooperation policies, seeking parliamentary approval to make the February nuclear agreement legally binding.
On the law enforcement front, the second agreement emphasizes strengthened cooperation in intelligence sharing and combating crimes linked to extremist organizations. Minister Orbán noted the importance of collaboration against far-left extremist groups, specifically mentioning networks associated with Antifa Ost. This issue remains sensitive in Hungary, following attacks in Budapest in 2023 involving individuals linked to such groups. These incidents have gained further attention after the European Parliament’s decision not to lift the parliamentary immunity of Italian MEP Ilaria Salis, one of those involved in the proceedings related to the attacks.
The successful conclusion of these agreements underscores a mutual effort by Hungary and the United States to deepen cooperation in crucial areas of energy security and law enforcement. This collaboration also reflects a sustained continuity of policies initiated under Hungary’s previous government, aiming to reinforce both countries’ strategic interests in the region.
