Google Prevails in Antitrust Case, Avoids Breakup Threat to Business Model.

Date:

A federal judge in the United States has ruled against the Department of Justice’s attempt to compel Google to divest its advertising exchange platform, AdX. This decision allows Google to maintain a significant component of its advertising technology operations, despite legal challenges. The ruling came from Judge Leonie Brinkema, who rejected the demand for the divestiture of AdX but did approve most of the proposed restrictions on Google’s business practices.

This decision follows a 2025 legal judgment where Google was found to have unlawfully maintained monopolies in the sectors of publisher ad servers and advertising exchanges. The Justice Department, along with several states, contended that Google’s historical behavior warranted the company’s loss of control over AdX. In response, Google argued against the divestiture, citing the potential technical challenges and the risk of disruption to its customers if the platform were to be separated.

The outcome signifies another hurdle for U.S. antitrust regulators in their efforts to dismantle large technology corporations. Past legal efforts aimed at initiating forced sales of assets in other major tech firms have similarly failed to achieve the desired outcomes. This ruling highlights the difficulties faced by authorities in addressing competition concerns within the tech industry through asset divestiture.

With the judge’s decision, Google is permitted to retain its advertising exchange operations, albeit under newly imposed behavioral measures. These measures are intended to alleviate competition concerns and address issues related to the treatment of publishers within the advertising sector. The case underscores the ongoing tension between regulatory bodies and tech giants over market dominance and antitrust practices.
