At the U20 World Wrestling Championships held in Bratislava, Hungarian athletes showcased their prowess in Greco-Roman wrestling by clinching three medals. László Koppány emerged as a key performer, securing a silver medal in the fiercely competitive 130kg category. Koppány’s journey to the final was marked by impressive victories against contenders from China, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Egypt. However, in the decisive gold-medal match, he faced Russia’s Ali Ilyasov, the reigning world and European champion, and ultimately settled for silver following an 8–0 defeat.
Meanwhile, Zalán Toplak, representing the Ferencváros wrestling club, added to Hungary’s medal tally by earning a bronze in the 77kg category. After entering the repechage, Toplak’s determination paid off with a commanding 10–2 win over Georgia’s Giorgi Gogelashvili in the bronze medal bout. This achievement marked Toplak’s first podium finish at a World Championship event, underscoring his potential on the international stage.
Not to be outdone, Petro Zsitovoz delivered an impressive performance in the 67kg category, also securing a bronze medal. Zsitovoz’s path to the podium included a decisive 11–3 victory over Egypt’s Mohamed Abdelrehim, the U23 world champion. Overcoming an early setback, Zsitovoz’s resilience and skill shone through in the placement match, further enhancing Hungary’s standing at the championships.
The championships commenced with Greco-Roman wrestling, a discipline where eight Hungarian athletes competed as part of the nation’s 22-member delegation. Their collective efforts and individual triumphs underscored the strength and depth of Hungary’s wrestling talent at the international level. The medals won by Koppány, Toplak, and Zsitovoz highlighted their dedication and the rigorous training that prepared them for such a prestigious event.
