Greece and Türkiye Enhance Security Cooperation to Tackle Cross-Border Crime

Date:

In a bid to enhance bilateral security cooperation, Greek Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis and Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci convened in Athens. The meeting, held at Greece’s Ministry of Citizen Protection, follows the Greece–Türkiye Supreme Cooperation Council meeting in Ankara last February and underscores the ongoing efforts to address shared security challenges between the two nations.

The discussions primarily revolved around combating organized crime, terrorism, extremism, human trafficking, and drug smuggling. Both ministers focused on disrupting criminal networks that exploit undocumented migrants and engage in money laundering linked to illegal activities. This meeting highlights the importance of tackling cross-border crime and strengthening operational coordination between the two countries.

Minister Chrysochoidis stressed the need for improved information sharing and operational coordination between Greek and Turkish security agencies. He also expressed concerns about Turkish nationals allegedly linked to criminal groups operating within Greece. These concerns underscore the complexities involved in cross-border security issues that both nations face.

Turkish Interior Minister Ciftci acknowledged the existing level of cooperation and emphasized his support for expanding joint efforts, particularly in strengthening security and disrupting human trafficking networks. The commitment from both sides to enhance cooperation reflects a mutual understanding of the importance of addressing these issues despite longstanding differences between Greece and Türkiye.

This meeting is part of a continued effort by both countries to overcome historical tensions and focus on shared security concerns. By fostering dialogue and collaboration, Greece and Türkiye aim to create a more secure environment for their citizens and effectively tackle the pressing issue of organized cross-border crime.
