Hungarian MEPs Urge Unfreezing of EU Funds to Boost Economic Stability.

Date:

Members of the European Parliament from Hungary’s Fidesz-KDNP party are pressing for the swift and unconditional release of European Union funds currently withheld from their country. These Hungarian MEPs have highlighted that approximately €6.3 billion, tied to three operational programs, was frozen last year. This sum represents about 55% of the allocated funds for these programs. Additionally, they are calling for the release of financial support from the EU’s post-pandemic Recovery and Resilience Facility, as well as broader cohesion funds designated for Hungary.

The MEPs argue that Hungary negotiated approximately €22 billion in additional cohesion funds in 2020, claiming that a portion of these funds is being withheld due to political reasons by European institutions. They are also advocating for an €11 billion increase to the EU’s 2027 budget, which includes a proposed €2.5 billion boost for the Common Agricultural Policy. The group is seeking enhanced support for sectors like young farmers, the wine industry, and beekeeping.

In light of recent agricultural challenges, Hungarian members of the Patriots for Europe group have suggested doubling the EU agricultural crisis fund from €450 million to €900 million. This proposal comes in response to drought-induced crop losses and escalating costs for livestock farmers. Furthermore, they are requesting more funding for border protection, reimbursement of Hungary’s border-control expenses, and a reevaluation of the EU migration pact. The MEPs also advocate for the restoration of Erasmus funding for Hungarian university students affected by current participation restrictions.

The Fidesz-KDNP delegation has put forth a proposal to reduce EU funding for civil society organizations by €250 million. They argue that these organizations exert politically motivated pressure on member states, a stance that aligns with their broader call for changes in how EU funds are allocated and used. Through these proposals, the Hungarian MEPs aim to address what they perceive as financial and political imbalances within the EU’s funding framework.
