German Chancellor Friedrich Merz delivered a confident speech in the Bundestag as lawmakers debated the government’s proposed budget for 2025–2029. Addressing both economic and security concerns, Merz emphasized his administration’s commitment to stability, increased defense spending, and continued support for Ukraine.
In his speech, Merz acknowledged the challenges still facing Germany but struck an optimistic tone, urging citizens to maintain faith in the country’s strength and values. “It is a joy to live in Germany, and above all, we are fortunate to live in a country of freedom and peace,” he said, adding that the government would continue working “with courage and confidence.”
Highlighting the importance of national security, Merz defended record defense expenditures, made possible by a constitutional change, as crucial for maintaining NATO unity. He warned that failure to act decisively could have led to the alliance’s collapse amid rising global tensions. Merz reiterated Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine despite criticism from both the far-left and pro-Russian factions in parliament.
Tensions escalated during the session when Alice Weidel, leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), launched personal attacks against Merz, branding him a “paper chancellor” and accusing him of breaking promises. Merz firmly rebuked the insults, stating that democratic debate must allow space for criticism but not tolerate defamation or personal denigration.
