Poland’s President Nawrocki Pushes Germany on Reparations, Steinmeier Stands Firm

Polish President Karol Nawrocki met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin, where he raised the long-standing issue of wartime reparations. Nawrocki reiterated Poland’s demand for compensation over World War II losses, a matter Germany continues to consider legally settled.
In a statement from Steinmeier’s office, it was emphasized that while Germany’s position remains unchanged, both nations share a responsibility for remembrance and honoring historical memory. The talks also covered the war in Ukraine, with both leaders reaffirming the need for continued support to Kyiv and strengthening NATO’s eastern flank.
During the meeting, President Nawrocki invited Steinmeier to visit Warsaw, an invitation which was accepted, signaling a continued effort to maintain close cooperation despite differences over reparations.
