On October 1, Greece took on the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council, marking its leadership role during the second and final term of its 2025–26 tenure as an elected member. This pivotal position places Greece at the forefront of addressing several pressing global conflicts and issues.
Ambassador Aglaia Balta, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, will oversee the 15-member council during this period. The Security Council is slated to tackle numerous international challenges, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, the escalating situation in Gaza, tensions surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, the conflict in Sudan, and the security crisis in Haiti.
Particularly in Haiti, the council’s involvement is critical as an international security force works to curb armed violence in the lead-up to national elections. The Security Council’s role in these discussions underscores its responsibility in maintaining international peace and security.
Greece’s presidency coincides with significant deliberations on selecting the next UN Secretary-General. The Security Council is tasked with recommending a candidate to the General Assembly, with the new Secretary-General set to assume office on January 1, 2027.
