Türkiye Alerts Greece on Israel Defense Ties Impacting Economic Relations

Date:

The geopolitical landscape in the Eastern Mediterranean remains tense as Türkiye and Greece navigate longstanding disputes over maritime boundaries and territorial claims. Despite efforts to mend relations, recent developments have rekindled regional tensions. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has expressed concerns about Greece’s increasing defense collaboration with Israel, urging Athens to consider regional stability.

Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s desire for amicable relations with Greece but voiced apprehension over Greece’s military activities, particularly its cooperation with Israel and the deployment of military assets on Aegean islands. These islands are subject to demilitarization agreements, according to Türkiye, and remain a contentious issue between the neighboring nations.

While Greece insists its defense measures are necessary to ensure national security and uphold sovereignty, these actions have been met with skepticism by Türkiye. The historical friction over maritime rights and the military status of the Aegean islands continues to be a flashpoint, complicating efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region.

Beyond its immediate concerns with Greece, Türkiye is also wary of Israel’s military operations in Syria. Fidan criticized these actions, suggesting they threaten regional stability. He underscored Türkiye’s support for Syria’s efforts toward rebuilding security and governance through diplomatic means.

In addition to addressing bilateral tensions, Fidan highlighted Türkiye’s broader regional security initiatives. Türkiye is engaged in developing a security partnership with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, aiming to enhance cooperation and address regional threats, including those affecting Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Fidan reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to fostering diplomatic collaboration for regional peace and stability.
