Stunning Spell by Maharaj Sees Proteas Cruise to Victory

Date:

A simply stunning 10-over spell from Keshav Maharaj allowed South Africa to cruise to a 98-run victory over a shell-shocked Australian side in the first ODI. The veteran spinner’s maiden five-wicket haul (5-33) single-handedly turned the match in the Proteas’ favor at Cazaly’s Stadium.
Chasing a challenging 297 for victory, Australia appeared to be on track at 0-60. However, the introduction of spin brought about a swift and brutal collapse. Maharaj was at the heart of the destruction, bowling with impeccable accuracy to rip through the middle order and reduce the hosts to 6-89 in the blink of an eye.
Earlier, South Africa’s batsmen had laid the groundwork for the win. A 92-run opening stand set a positive tone, with Aiden Markram going on to make 82. He was ably supported by Temba Bavuma, who compiled a steady 65, ensuring the bowlers had a substantial total to defend.
Despite a captain’s innings of 88 from Mitch Marsh, Australia was never able to recover from Maharaj’s devastating spell. The lack of support from the rest of the batting lineup was stark, leading to them being bowled out for 198 and conceding a 1-0 series lead.
