Escalating Iran-US Tensions Propel Crude Oil Prices Up Over 7%

Date:

The global oil market experienced a sharp rise in prices, surging by over 7%, following escalating military tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Saudi Arabia. This spike has sparked apprehensions about potential disruptions to the world’s energy supply chain. Brent crude prices climbed nearly 8% to reach about $90.75 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) saw an increase of almost 7%, hitting roughly $84.76 per barrel. These increases were triggered by recent military activities that have intensified fears of a prolonged conflict in the region.

The tensions escalated when Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced it had launched ballistic missiles targeting U.S. military bases in Jordan. This was reportedly in retaliation for recent U.S. military actions. Concurrently, U.S. and Saudi forces conducted joint strikes against positions held by Iran-backed militants in Iraq. The strikes, according to U.S. and Saudi statements, focused on logistics and weapons facilities connected to recurring drone attacks on military and energy sites.

Maritime security concerns have also heightened amid the conflict. The IRGC reported its naval units intercepted and attacked three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, claiming the vessels did not heed navigation warnings. In a separate incident, Yemen’s Houthi rebels stated they had targeted an oil tanker linked to Saudi interests in the Red Sea, further amplifying the risks for commercial shipping in these critical waterways.

The volatile situation has increased fears about potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, both crucial corridors for global energy transit. Analysts in the market have cautioned that ongoing attacks on shipping lanes and energy infrastructure could sustain elevated oil prices and contribute to increased volatility in global markets.
